Man Diamond Dog Tag
Stream of Death by Bill Stackhouse, A Catskills community is rocked by a dog who digs up a famous stolen diamond and Sicilians who have sworn a vendetta for a World War II crime. Sicily, World War II. The Allied landing has begun. Will the Italians fight with the Germans, or run? The answer leads a German officer to a murderous act and the theft of a Sicilian family heirloom. Ulster County, New York, the present. The Catskills community is the perfect, peaceful place for a widowed mother to raise her son, work in her brother's pub, and date the chief of police. Young Danny and his ace dog love to fish and make two friends, both old men, who share their stream with him. Nature's generosity and Danny's skill is such that fish becomes a regular menu item at the pub. All goes swimmingly until one day, the dog digs up a pouch containing the long missing Isabela Pendant. More shocking, someone soon shoots the senior gentleman, the one who is married to toothsome Cynthia. He falls into the stream, but a young Protestant priest fishes out the dying man and hears his last confession. Chief McAvoy would like to know what it was, but Fr. John's lips are sealed. In Greene County, just to the north, a luxurious retirement home houses Don Vittorio Gianelli, brother of the long dead Contessa whose dazzling diamond has now reappeared. Chief McAvoy finds this coincidence hard to swallow. But no matter how he prods, no information falls his way. In the end, like a fisherman, he relies upon guile to reel in his killer... This atmospheric and unusually plotted novel balancing hardboiled and softer elements adds up to a knockout debut for Bill Stackhouse.
Wealth and Our Commonwealth: Why America Should Tax Accumulated Fortunes by William H. Gates, X A world leader in philanthropy (and father of the planet"s wealthiest man) and an expert on U.S. economic inequality (and heir of Oscar Mayer) on the "billionaire backlash" The "Man Bites Dog" story of over 1,000 highnet- worth individuals who rose up to protest the repeal of the estate tax made headlines everywhere last year. Central to the organization of what Newsweek tagged the "billionaire backlash" were two visionaries: Bill Gates, Sr., cochair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest foundation on earth, and Chuck Collins, cofounder of United for a Fair Economy and Responsible Wealth, and the great-grandson of meat packer Oscar Mayer who gave away his substantial inheritance at the age of twenty-six. Gates and Collins argue that individual wealth is a product not only of hard work and smart choices but of the society that provides the fertile soil for success. They don"t subscribe to the "Great Man" theory of wealth creation but contend that society"s investments, such as economic development, education, health care, and property rights protection, all contribute to any individual"s good fortune. With the repeal proposed by the Bush administration, we might be facing the future that Teddy Roosevelt feared--where huge fortunes amassed and untaxed would evolve into a dangerous and permanent aristocracy. Repeal would drop federal revenues $294 billion in the first 10 years; 27 some $750 billion would be lost in the second decade, not to mention that the U.S. Treasury estimates that charitable contributions would drop by $6 billion a year. But what about all those modest families that would lose the farm? Gates and Collins expose the fallacy of thisargument, pointing out that this is largely a myth and that the very same lobbies and politicians who are crying "cows" have opposed other legislation that would actually have helped small farmers.
Diamond (dog) - Diamond was Sir Isaac Newton's favorite dog, which, by upsetting a candle, set fire to manuscripts containing his notes on experiments conducted over a course of twenty years. According to one account, Newton is said to have exclaimed: "O Diamond, Diamond, thou little knowest the damage thou hast done" (or alternatively "O Diamond, Diamond, how little knowest thou the mischief thou hast done"). Dog tag - A dog tag is a small flat tag worn on collars or harnesses by dogs, usually with identifying information such as the owner's telephone number so that the owner can be notified if the dog is lost. Dog tag (identifier) - A dog tag is the colloquial name for the identification tags worn by military personnel, especially in the United States, because of their resemblance to actual dog tags. In the US the name, military ID number, blood type, and religion are stamped on a small piece of metal that is worn on a metal chain around the neck. Dog Man Star - Dog Man Star is the second album by Suede, released by Nude Records in 1994. It was their last album to feature guitarist Bernard Butler, due to growing tensions between Butler and singer Brett Anderson ending with Butler leaving shortly before the album's completion.
